One of the most important items on your furniture list is your sofa. Ask any chiropractor! Sinking into an overly cushy sofa or collapsed chair cushion pulls down on your spine and pelvis, causing strain and instability.
Unfortunately, a lot of purchases of sofas do not consider important structural decisions, often based on the assumption that all sofas are created equally. Unfortunately, this is not true, but the infrequency of purchases an important item like a sofa means that we are not all prepared as to what to know to look for in a design.
Don’t worry, you don’t need to know, because we do! Here at HG Furniture, we aim to help find a furniture solution for your space, whether it be a home or business.
Sofas are not an everyday item to buy on people’s shopping lists. A lounge purchase may only be done once every 10 years or so, depending on the quality of your previous purchase. Quite often, we put up with a collapsing sofa that has moulded to snuggly fit all our postural sins – not the best solution yet one of the best reasons to invest in a new lounge.
We love collaborating with our clients and discussing the best things to consider when selecting a new sofa. We will guide you based on our experience of design, lounge constructions and choice of upholstery, but only you can answer the most important question – is it comfortable?
Comfort levels are different to everyone, depending on body height, size, structure and expectations, including how you intend to use the lounge. It is for all the family? Do you have children? Pets? Are you an entertainer? Is it for your apartment? Is it for a business waiting room? How long do you expect people to sit on the lounge? (People watching a movie will sit on a lounge differently to people waiting to see you for a meeting, or someone wanting to read a good book).
Therefore, a physical visit to our store is essential. You need to sit on everything! HG has a large range of different types of sofas, chosen to represent a range of seating options for the many brands that we stock. With over 20 brands from Europe, New Zealand and Australia, we choose items for our showroom that provide you with a large choice of seat types, comfort and size so that you have a variety and a selection to suit your style and purpose.
Surprisingly for some, not all elevators fit all lounges! You would be surprised to read of how many experiences we hear of deliveries from other stores not fitting into an apartment lift. At HG, we ask all the relevant questions first – it is like a custom suit fitting – so that the furniture delivered provides a solution, not a problem!
Additionally, HG Furniture Solutions has an impressive fabric room that allows for a unique, fit for purpose solutions for our broad range of designs. HG proudly stocks fabric from Mokum / James Dunlop Textiles, Instyle, Westbury Textiles, Décor Design , as well as exclusive fabric offerings from Europe specified for particular products within our range.
We are constantly researching fabric suitability, meeting with representatives from the major fabric houses, ensuring that they are value-for-money products, along with being fit-for-purpose and offering durability and quality. With sofas from Studio Pip having a 10-year warranty on their frames, for example, it is important to have a fabric suitable for this expected performance.
We have recently noticed increased demand for locally made fabrics and we are happy to say that we can offer ranges with a quality selection across the board. Instyle is a longstanding supporter of Australian design and manufacturing, with over 80% of their textiles being Australian made. HG is happy to guide you on this sustainable selection, including the consideration of manufacturers that have reduced water and energy use in their production of upholstery.
We also stock quality leathers and vinyls, not just for use on sofa upholstery. The Chloe Desk by Studio Pip has a hard-wearing antibacterial vinyl top by Forbo, available in a wide variety of colours, and suitable for high traffic use you would expect for a desk surface. It was a refreshing surface choice, and one that certainly is suitable for its purpose, whilst still providing a stylish furniture solution.
Just as we advise on upholstery based on its use, we also advise on upholstery based on the design of the sofa. For example, the new Dandy sofa by Massproductions, has been upholstered in the Manhattan fabric by Westbury Textiles. This delightful fabric has a tactility pleasing feel, that brings up feelings of reassuring nostalgia, despite being classified as a heavy-duty upholstery (and probably just as well – you will not want to stop touching it!). This combination means that your enjoyment of the lounge is increased. A different fabric would produce a different emotional response, so it follows that the importance of choosing a fabric or leather is tantamount to your enjoyment of the furniture.
Similarly, some sofa designs lend themselves to some upholstery more than others. The Spencer lounge is best covered in leather, and we are currently showcasing the sofa in leather by Décor Design. Décor Design offers a collection of fine upholstery leathers (and the choice and type can also be overwhelming, but we’ve got it covered!). Fabric, of course, is a safe and natural choice, but we believe that the Spencer lounge in leather creates a more commanding presence. We feel that its sleek lines of its design are best shown off by the natural tones and strength of leather.
The Play sofa (another intelligent design by Studio Pip) favours a thicker, perhaps more casual fabric. The Mackenzie fabric by Mokum is ideal, offering a high-performance upholstery with an incredibly soft and gentle touch, making it ideal for a sectional modular lounge designed for casual loungeroom areas, commercial break-out spaces, rumpus rooms and the like. Whilst you may choose any fabric you like for this diverse Australian made brand, here at HG we like to guide you to how we best feel the design will benefit your area. We want you to love the Play as much as we do!!
Remember, our approach is collaborative, yet our process rigorous, so that you enjoy every encounter with your sofa. Your sofa from HG should not just be beautiful but it should mean something too.
